Young Nudy's Attorney Claims He's A Victim Of "Mistaken Identity"

More details have surfaced concerning Young Nudy‘s weekend arrest (Feb. 3). Outlined in a statement from the ATL-based rapper’s attorney, W. Scott Smith, he might be the victim of “mistaken identity.” According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Young Nudy was arrested early Sunday morning during a traffic stop for charges of assault and gang-related activity. Born Quantavious Thomas, the artist was apprehended alongside his peer and cousin, 21 Savage, who was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) on claims of illegal immigration status.

“We believe that Young Nudy is innocent and this is a case of mistaken identity. Young Nudy’s legal team is working closely with law enforcement to ensure this case does not get blown out of proportion,” the attorney’s statement reads. “Young Nudy is taking these charges very seriously. Had law enforcement contacted us directly we would have voluntarily surrendered, but Young Nudy was arrested shortly after a performance Saturday night.” Smith also notes the warrant officials had for Nudy’s arrest stem from a 2017 occurrence, but the charges were previously cleared by the Atlanta Police Department. However, Dekalb County police officials took on the charges leading to Nudy’s current detainment.

I.C.E. claims the “A Lot” rapper overstayed the extent of his one-year visa when he migrated to the U.S. in 2005 from the U.K. In a statement from attorney Charles H. Kuck, immigration officials were aware of 21 Savage’s pending resident status but overlooked it until now.

“The Department of Homeland Security has known his address and his history since his filing for the U Visa in 2017, yet they took no action against him until this past weekend,” the statement reveals. “ICE can only continue to detain individuals who are a threat the community or a flight risk to not show up at their hearings. Obviously, our client is not a flight risk, as he is widely recognizable, and a prominent member of the music industry.”
