Some would call it luck but that would only be true if there’s a consensus on talent being an element of luck.
If it’s not talent, what are the odds that after a long career hiatus from one of the most competitive industries in the world, Akosua Busia is set to make a Broadway appearance once again—but this time starring alongside Academy Award winning actress- Lupita Nyong’o?
Popularly known for playing Nettie in ‘Colour Purple,’ Hollywood actress-Akosua Busia of Ghanaian descent has satisfied her commitment to ensure that her daughter turns 18 before taking on her career-woman cloak—and she is already set for a Broadway appearance in ECLIPSED which opens at the John Golden Theater on February 23rd for a limited run until June 19th.
Akosua Busia will be starring alongside Lupita Nyong’o in ECLIPSED, the first ever show to make it to Broadway with an all female cast, starring 5 women of African decent; directed by an African woman and written by an African woman.
ECLIPSED is written by award winning Zimbabwean playwright-Danai Gurira who stars in the popular US TV show, “Walking Dead”— and it’s a powerful play about the Liberian War.
For Akosua Busia, she will be playing a home game as this will her third time starring in a show on Broadway.
Apart from her acclaimed ‘Colour Purple’ performance, Akosua Busia’s movie appearances include sterling role interpretations such as Bessie in NATIVE SON-1996, Jewel in ROSEWOOD (1997), and as Patience in TEARS OF THE SUN (2003). She has also appeared on television in the show ER.
At last month’s 6th Ghana Movie Awards, Akosua Busia was honoured with 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award at the Accra International Conference Center.
