Nevada Institutes 9% Tax For Large Live Events
LAS VEGAS (CelebrityAccess) — As Nevada, particularly Las Vegas, increasingly becomes a destination for music festivals, state lawmakers voted last month to to impose a 9 percent tax on admissions to most live entertainment events.
The new law will impose the tax on all events in venues with a capacity of 15,000, even if the organizers have non-profit status.
The new law replaces a previous two-tiered system that allowed for numerous exemptions and inclusions and is set to go into effect in October, after the swell of this year's festival season is over, the Associated Press reported.
Unsurprisingly, festival promoters were unenthusiastic about the new tax, with organizers for the popular Electric Daisy Festival, which takes place in Las Vegas, describing the tax as "extremely detrimental."
Pasquale Rotale, head of the Live Nation-owned Insomniac Events who produce Electric Daisy, told the Associated Press that while he doesn't want to move the festival from its Las Vegas home, there were other places he could take it if needed. – Staff Writers
