'Knives Out' 3 News: Everything We Know

Publish date: 2024-06-22

Rian Johnson's murder mystery Knives Out became an instant classic when it premiered in 2019. Starring former James Bond actor Daniel Craig as the brilliant Southern-gentleman detective Benoit Blanc, the Agatha Christie-inspired whodunnit grossed over $300 million and earned the writer/director an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. Now, Johnson has delighted his fans with the film's sequel Glass Onion, a completely new mystery that sees Blanc traveling to a private island owned by a billionaire played by Edward Norton to solve another murder.

Premiering on Netflix on December 23 following its one-week Thanksgiving theatrical run, the second Benoit Blanc adventure is must-watch holiday viewing, showing another engrossing puzzle played out by a stacked cast including Janelle Monáe and Kate Hudson. Fans who are already wishing for a new Knives Out mystery will be happy to know that Johnson and the streamer already have a threequel in the works.

Read on for everything we know so far about the third Knives Out.

When will Knives Out 3 come out?

It's been less than a week since Glass Onion landed on Netflix, so we'll have to wait a while for the next Knives Out premiere. The first film landed in theaters in fall 2019, and Glass Onion was filmed over the summer of 2021 after the streamer bought the rights to the next two Knives Out films earlier that year. Luckily, Johnson has confirmed that he's planning to work on his third whodunnit in the new year.

"Honestly, over the past couple of months, the most exciting creative thing to me right now is that third movie," he told Deadline, adding, "I think I’m going to hop right into it. Not because of a contractual obligation, but, genuinely, that’s the shiny object I find my nose pointed toward right now. [It’s] the idea of figuring out how it can be completely different from this one as well as the first one."

Who will join the cast of Knives Out 3?

The Knives Out films are true ensemble casts, and the best part about waiting for the third film will be theorizing which actors could join the film. Daniel Craig has confirmed that he's on board for the next film; after all, we can't have a Knives Out mystery without Benoit Blanc! In an interview with Variety, the Logan Lucky actor said, "If [Johnson] keeps writing them, I’ll keep doing them. That’s what makes it easy then, he’s such a wonderful writer that it’s there on the page for me to do."

We've likely said our goodbyes to the rest of the Glass Onion cast, as Johnson has expressed his intent to make each film completely different from the last. If anything, we may get another cameo from Hugh Grant, who made an appearance as Blanc's live-in partner. There's also the chance that the detective has reason to call on Marta (Ana de Armas) or Helen (Janelle Monáe) for an adventure down the road. Fingers crossed!
