Is Ed Sheeran Left-Handed?

Research from HealthLine suggests that redheads are more likely to be left-handed. This is because both traits are recessive. British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is, of course, a redhead. But is he left-handed?

Ed Sheeran is right-handed. He plays a right-handed guitar, writes with his right hand and paints with his right hand.

Guitars

Ed’s guitar journey began as a young child. He was always very fond of music and his family encouraged these musical interests. 

Ed’s first guitar was, in fact, a gift from his Uncle. Initially, he taught himself to play, but eventually, his family paid for proper lessons. 

Right from the beginning, Ed was using a right-handed guitar and strumming the guitar strings with his right hand. 

Over time, Ed’s guitar playing has got a lot more advanced. He now alternates between three main techniques: basic strumming, fingerpicking, and beat making on the body of the guitar. 

But one thing has remained constant throughout Ed’s career: he always uses his right hand. In an Instagram post from December 6th, 2019, Ed is captured playing an acoustic version of his hit song ‘I Don’t Care’. He is using a right-handed guitar which means he is strumming with his right hand and changing notes / chords with his left hand. Ed captioned the post: “I recorded a live version of I Don’t Care at @abbeyroadstudios a while back. Link in bio to watch it. Enjoy x”.

The same is true of Ed’s post from November 29th, 2019. In this clip, Sheeran plays an acoustic version of ‘South Of The Border’, which he released in collaboration with Camila Cabello. Again, Ed plays with a right-handed guitar and strums using his right hand. 

The Ed Sheeran Guitar

Back in 2017 Ed collaborated with guitar specialists, Martin & Co, to release a trilogy of acoustic guitars. Based upon Ed’s love for the LX1E LITTLE MARTIN, the guitars follow the theme of his mathematical album titles. 

The ÷ edition, for instance, features a blue soundhole rosette, an engrained ÷ symbol on the woodwork, and blue ÷ fret marks. 

Retailing at $699, the guitar is extremely sought after. But is it true to Ed’s own guitar? Is it only available as a right-hander? 

Fortunately not! Martin produced both a right-handed and left-handed version of the instrument. 

Painting 

But guitar playing isn’t Ed’s only talent. In recent years Ed has also developed a keen fondness of painting. In a carousel of posts on Instagram showcasing his creations, Ed said:

“Spent an entire month since tour ended painting, which I’ve never done before. Had so much fun doing it. If I’m honest I felt a bit useless once tour had ended, coz singing, writing and gigging is all I’ve ever known, so it’s nice to find a new way to be creative. I’d recommend anyone getting a few paints and having a splash around, it’s so fun.”

The canvasses feature a haphazard, colorful design made up of several layers of splatters and smears. 

In some of the photos, Ed is captured crouched on the floor with a black bucket of paint in his left hand and a paintbrush in his right hand. So again, we can conclude from this that Ed Sheeran paints with his right hand. 

It seems that artistic talent runs in the Sheeran family. As a child, Ed’s dad worked as an art curator at Cartwright Hall in Bradford and Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. He now works as an art lecturer. His mother, on the other hand, worked at Manchester City Art Gallery, but nowadays makes a living by designing and making jewelry.
