First Listen Review: Five things you can expect from DNCE and Nicki Minaj's 'Kissing Strangers'

Publish date: 2024-06-06

Earlier this week, DNCE caused internet carnage after confirming their brand new single, which will be released on Friday. Not only are we getting a new song from our favourite band, but it’s also a collaboration with rap queen Nicki Minaj!

‘Kissing Strangers’ is set to be a huge summer anthem, and both DNCE and Nicki have teased the track and its music video all over social media. So far, we’ve had a screen cap of Nicki roughing up Joe Jonas, the shortest teaser which gives next to nothing away, and a telephone number. (Hint: give it a ring and you might get to hear an equally short but extremely satisfying teaser, and a voice note from Mr Jonas).

However, with one more day to go until its release, we’re sure you’re all dying to hear the track in all its glory. Well, here at CelebMix, we’ve been fortunate enough to have a sneaky listen to the track in full, so here’s the lowdown on what you can expect from ‘Kissing Strangers’ tomorrow.

1. It’s a certified bop

Okay, this is a given. Both DNCE and Nicki are known for delivering some top class jams, but trust us when we say that ‘Kissing Strangers’ is on another level. Reworking the pop scene with their unique blend of funk, DNCE have created a super infectious offering. Throw in some slick bars from Nicki Minaj, and you’ve got yourself the next big summer hit. We love the hypnotic vibe at the beginning, Joe’s falsetto in the bridge, the irresistible chorus, Nicki’s banging verse….basically we love it all.

2. The catchy chorus is going to be stuck in your head for the rest of your life

‘Kissing Strangers’ has a cool vibe throughout, but the chorus is the standout part. From the first ‘OOF’, we were obsessed and we know you will be too. The chorus is full of catchy hooks including a series of ‘nana-na nana-na na na’s’, the biggest earworm of the whole song. There is no doubt that Joe, Cole, JinJoo and Jack are going to have a ball performing this song live.

3. The lyrics are fun and relatable

DNCE have a knack for delivering fun lyrics, a lot of which are about real life situations. ‘Kissing Strangers’ is no exception. The meaning behind the song is fairly self explanatory, talking about getting with strangers until you find the right ‘one’. With easy-to-learn lyrics such as “Kissing strangers til I find someone I love / Kissing strangers til I find someone I trust / Open heart, open mind, never know who you’ll find / Open heart, close your eyes, kissing strangers”, you’ll be singing along in no time.

4. You’re going to want to learn Nicki Minaj’s verse ASAP

We don’t know about you, but rapping Nicki Minaj songs is our party trick, and her ‘Kissing Strangers’ verse is the next on our list to learn. Sometimes, a feature can be a bit redundant in a song and add very little to it. However, Nicki’s rap is fierce and slots in perfectly against the funky beat. From sonagrams and holagrams to kiss kisses and piggy backs, she truly is the queen of spitting lyrics.

5. It’s another unique track from DNCE

One thing we’ve got to say about DNCE is that no two tracks of theirs are the same. ‘Kissing Strangers’ certainly shows a growth in their musical style, without compromising the feel-good element we know and love them for. By developing some of the funkier sounds first shared on their debut album, the band have created something completely different. Many people will try and compare ‘Kissing Strangers’ to their global hit ‘Cake By The Ocean’, however, whilst it’s definitely on the same level of catchiness, that’s pretty much where the comparison ends. ‘Kissing Strangers’ oozes such a fun yet slick vibe, and stands out in its own right. With the addition of Nicki Minaj, we’ve got high hopes that it will be their biggest hit yet.

A DNCE and Nicki Minaj collab is everything we needed in life (even if we didn’t realise it before). We’re officially obsessed with ‘Kissing Strangers’ and we’re not even sorry about it – we know you’ll be the same when it’s available to stream and download on Friday (April 14)!
