ABBA Jukebox Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again Tops Weekend Box Office
LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — For the second week in a row, both domestic and international box office grosses were topped by movies that did not involve superheroes or lightsabers.
This week, it was Universal’s “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” an ABBA jukebox romantic comedy that served as both a prequel and sequel to the 2008 hit “Mama Mia.”
“Mamma Mia” stars Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Cher, and Meryl Streep. The film was directed by Ol Parker, who is best known for “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2011) and its sequel “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2015)
On its debut weekend, “Mamma Mia” grossed $76.8M worldwide, $34.4M of which came from North American theaters according to estimates compiled by comScore. That just topped its production budget of about $75 million.
